Apprentices offer businesses the opportunity to be part of the team by bringing new fresh ideas, being cost effective to the employer whilst increasing productivity and being a loyal employee for the future. Grantham College offer a variety of Apprenticeships including Automotive, Construction, Engineering, Hairdressing & Barbering and Retail at different levels.
Apprentices learn the job role whilst in the workplace meaning the employer can help to mould the apprentice to their specific needs as well as offering training in several different areas. One of Grantham College’s apprentices Lisa Brandreth is an example of this as she took home the prestigious ‘Lincolnshire & Rutland Apprentice of the Year’ award at the ceremony which took place at The Lawns in Lincoln.
Lisa is currently completing her Apprenticeship at UK Hair and Holistics in Grantham where she has achieved her Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship and is currently working towards Level 3 Advanced. As well as winning overall apprentice of the year at the ceremony Lisa also took home the award for ‘Apprentice of the Year – Retail & Commercial Enterprise’. Lisa’s employer UK Hair and Holistics said ‘Lisa is a very loyal, enthusiastic and determined worker with an ability that has earned her a fantastic following amongst clients.’
Another of Grantham Colleges apprentices, Philip Jenkinson, won the award for ‘Apprentice of the Year - Engineering & Manufacturing Technologies’ during the evening. Philip is currently working towards his Level 3 Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship with KA Sensors in Grantham and is described by his employer as ‘professional and courteous who takes great pride in his work.’
Paul Ward, Apprenticeship Manager at Grantham College said ‘Lisa and Philip are fantastic examples of what can be achieved on an Apprenticeship programme and I am delighted that the Lincolnshire & Rutland Skills Awards have recognised their hard work, dedication and achievement by selecting them as sector winners. Grantham College’s success at the awards has been particularly pleasing this year in view that Lisa also won the overall Apprentice of the Year category. I wish both of them every success in their future careers. The message to local businesses is clear; investing in apprentices makes progressive business sense.’
One of the College’s Young Apprentices, Laura Sowerby won ‘Young Apprentice of the Year’ at the ceremony following on from her undertaking an Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care. Laura’s Young Apprenticeship has included three work placements including working with dementia care patients and children with complex needs of varying ages. One of the placements commented that Laura was ‘an inspiration to us all and really did wear her heart on her sleeve.’
Laura’s placement co-ordinator at Grantham College, Sarah Pearce said ‘Laura applied for the Young Apprenticeship as she had aspirations to become a nurse or social worker and because of her ongoing effort, commitment and motivation, I believe that either career path is well within her reach.’
Congratulations also go to JRM Plumbing & Heating and Metron Eledyne two employers which work with Grantham College and Guy Bailey a Level 2 Engineering apprentice at Metron Eledyne who were all finalists in their categories.
